Star Wars revolutionized the film industry back in the late seventies. The most popular big-screen space epics of all time have maintained their appeal over the years, and spawned fan devotion and creativity equal to Trek's. Alas, it seems like there are far more Trek kits on the market - as well as more readily available references and guides (but we'll see about *that*!). There are a number of AMT kits (of often dubious attention to detail) available in the US, UK and Australia, as well as a fleet of Micro-Machines and other toys useful as scratchbuilding starting points. The upcoming start to the third trilogy offers new hope for the variety of available Star Wars model kits. For more images of Star Wars craft, check out our Readers' Gallery. For a list of currently-available Star Wars ship/vehicle kits, please see our Star Wars Scales List.

Image: Bernard Szukiel's incredible Millennium Falcon in the Reader's Gallery |
Corellian Engineering Corp. YT-1200 Transport (Modified) Millennium Falcon - The classy tramp freighter that was a prominent character in all the Star Wars movies (so far). This ship is heavily modified from the 'stock' version - including uprated weapons, shields liberated from the Imperials, and a class 5 hyperdrive that makes it almost twice as fast as Imperial warships. The Falcon has been the subject of a number of kits, collectibles and toys - in a wide variety of scales. The most popular (or at least most widely available) models were a (roughly) 1/72 kit produced by MPC (later AMT/ERTL) in both cut-away and non-cutaway variants, and by Fine Molds in both 1/72 and 1/144 scales. |

Incom T-65 X-Wing Space Superiority Fighter The workhorse of the rebellion and one of the most instantly recognizable sci-fi icons. A descendent of the Z-95 Headhunter, its deadly blend of maneuverability and firepower was instrumental in the survival of the Rebellion. In a head-to-head dogfight with the standard Imperial TIE fighter, the X-Wing will almost always come out ahead. The design is updated as the T-70 for the third trilogy, starting with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It's still the bane of TIE fighters everywhere. The X-Wing is widely available in model kit form, in a variety of scales and media from numerous manufacturers. There has even been a flying model rocket version. |

Koensayr BTL-S3 Y-Wing Attack Starfighter The Y-Wing is an older craft, past it's prime by the Battle of Yavin (ANH) but still an important part of the Rebel Alliance. Though large and slow, it's extremely rugged and packs a heavy punch. This craft is seen in all three original Star Wars movies, starting with the first unsuccessful attack on the Death Star in ANH. An earlier version with the armor plating in place was seen in the "prequels" and the various Clone Wars series. Though not as numerous as X-Wing or Falcon models, there have been a number of Y-Wing kits produced. The best of these was undoubtedly the (now sadly discontinued) Fine Molds version in 1/72 scale. |

Alfred Wong's A-Wing in the Reader's Gallery |
Alliance A-Wing Fighter The A-Wing is the hot-rod of the Rebel arsenal. Small, nimble, and faster than even the TIE Interceptor, its a superb fighter - but also expensive to acquire and maintain, and difficult to train pilots to fly. This craft is (so far) only seen in the climactic battle sequences in ROTJ. The only mass-produced kit of this fighter was made by MPC (AMT/ERTL). It's long out of production, but it may still be found at swap meets and online auctions. Or, through Starship Modeler's Trading Post, from time to time. |

Damien Lee's Mon Calamari Cruiser in the reader's Gallery |
In the original trilogy of movies, the Mon Calamari make up the backbone of the Rebel fleet. These sleek capital ships give the fleet the needed muscle to back up the operations of smaller Rebel fighter fleet. Their organic shapes stand in contrast to Human-made vessels, and their designs vary from ship to ship. The two races we've seen most in TPM and AotC are the humanoid Naboo and amphibian Gungans. The Naboo are an old race, much enamored of art and elegance. Their cities, clothing and especially space craft reflect this. The Naboo Starfighter, their most well known starship, is a sleek, slippery, retro-looking design. Gungans share their home planet, living mostly underwater. AMT/ERTL released several kits of Jedi/Old Republic, Naboo and Gungan craft in support of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, but these sold poorly and have not (as of November 2015) been reissued. The garage kit industry has turned out any number of kits of canon, Expanded Universe or fan-made designs, but these are hard to find and generally made in limited numbers. |
