Comments I bought the Discovery model from Monsters in Motion 3 years ago because I always wanted a model of this ship ever since I saw the movie. I have models of the Moon bus and the Orion shuttle from when they were first offered. I felt that as a modeler my skills had advanced to the point where I could tackle a kit like this.

When I opened up the box I was severely disappointed. Not only was the model very inaccurate to the movie version but the casting was terrible. Several pieces were mis-shaped, crudely cast blobs that look like they were removed from an old worn out mold before comepletly setting and allowed to remain that way. There is zero quality control over the casting process with no inferior parts being replaced. If you are used to the hi-quality castings available for aircraft and other models you will be sorely disappointed in this kit and half tempted to throw it away or build a better one. This is what I am attempting to do, to scratch-build a 54" Discovery. If you have $3000 lying around then Captain Carboard, who makes the Aires shuttle and the EVA pod, will make one for you.

The bottom line is that if you absolutely, positively have to have this kit and you think the British 18" is even worse, which it is, then buy the kit and be prepared for a lot of heartache and work to get it presentable.

Overall Rating       Good kit, but with some problems.
Comments An ideal kit for the serious modeler how has always wanted to build this space ship since they saw it thirty years ago. The only piece that needs to be completely rebuilt is the main spine of the ship. The two smaller communication antennas also need to be replaced. Everything else is doable. And if you do get some bad pieces Lunar Models is more than happy to make it right. I know, they took care of me very well.

Overall Rating       Average. Get it if on sale or you love the subject.
Comments They don't make resin kits like this any more... thank goodness. I have 2 of them and I'm getting ready to start on taking the best from both. Seems to be 2 versions - hollow cast command module with parts/accommodations for a pod bay and one without. One has the spine cast around 3 piece of metal rod and the other has just the 'vertebrae' which you thread on tubing or rod of your own choosing. And there are other differences. But the spine is the key change.

Comments After reading the previous reviews you guys got off lucky! The kit I received only contained 85 parts some of which have the previously described defects. It appears I am missing the engine exhausts and a few other parts plus only one page of instructions starting with step 3 to step 7. The antenna dish have nicks on the edges and it looks as though the ball has been dropped on the floor with some scratches in it.

I purchased this model directly from Lunar Models in December of 2000. I thought it would be fun to commemorate the movie. After 5 months of e-mails to Phil at Lunar Models and promises to send the missing parts/instructions I have yet to see any of it.

Fortunately I have the skills to scratchbuild the missing parts and with the help of the movie and pictures on this site I will be able to do so.

It's a shame that some companies give the hobby a bad name (at least in my opinion). I was prepared to purchase quite a number of models from Lunar Models however $150 for a grab-bag does not make a pleasant modeling experience.

Comments First off, I don't know yet if I got a recast or not or if it may be a very early issue of the kit.

I've almost bought this kit several times in the past and broke down and won it off a recent eBay auction. First off, my kit came in a soft white box almost like a square shoebox and all the parts are molded in a brownish resin. Many of the parts have very soft detail, especially the little boxes, most of which were broke off their stems/sprues. The sphere is hollow and has the pod bay door removed- and it appears it wasn't cut out but actually made this way instead of being "molded" in place like the other two doors. There is also no metal rod unlike other kits of this item I've looked at.

While I was looking forward to building this kit, after going through the mess in the box, I am seriously thinking of reselling it or paying someone to build it as I have literally dozens of kits in various stages of construction before it and the likely aggravation this kit will give me isn't worth it.

Overall Rating       Good kit, but with some problems.
Comments After much deliberation i finally realised I couldn't live without having this model so I ordered via ebay from a lunar dealer. Kit arrived and is worth the wait and the money - even having to pay import duties to the UK. Yes some parts like the engines are poor, but the remaining pieces are exquisite and a joy to hold. Its going to be a long, hard job but one that brings its own rewards.

Overall Rating       Well worth getting.
Comments I just reviewed my kit today 11/04. The quality of this kit is very good! The Command Sphere is in very good condition. Time was taken when it was poured and it shows. Yes the Spine will need to be reworked. With some close detail mod's here and there, this kit will look great!
