Your Two Cents: Back to the Future Time Machine

The following are reader's opinions of the Back to the Future Time Machine made by Polar Lights.

Overall Rating       Good kit, but with some problems.
Comments This kit builds up nicely, but lacks some difficult to replicate details, most notably the "DMC" logo on the grille and the engraved "DeLorean" on the rear bumper. The molded-on conduits on the rocker panel and around the wheel wells would have looked better if they were seperate pieces.

My example had a flawless "stainless steel" finish. Unfortunately, I had to strip this plated finish (which took months to do thoroughly with ammonia baths) because I chose to model a "stock" DMC-12 sports car. Fortunately, the wheels, tires and interior parts are basically stock. Removing the time travel fittings from the interior was very straightforward, though the molded-on conduits of the body took weeks to properly remove. all body mounting holes were filled with scrap styrene plugs, except for the louvered areas behind the side windows. These were sculpted from epoxy putty.

To obtain details on this 1980's sports car, just feed "DeLorean" into your favorite search engine.

Polar Lights is to be commended on it's courage to produce a BTTF DeLorean, providing a good low-cost alternative to the Aoshima kit. Hopefully, they will show additional courage and produce a stock DeLorean with a plated stainless steel body as a companion piece. Keep up the good work PL!
