Scale: 1/1000
The Joxer was built using the 1/1000 USS Grissom and USS Enterprise Refit models. The nacelles from the Refit were used instead of the Grissom's, as well as the bridge dome and torpedo housing. Thin, half-round styrene was used to create a wider impulse engine at the back. The Grissom's decals were used except for the name and registry, which were homemade.
A little back story...
A derivative of the Giordano Bruno class, USS Joxer was the research vessel SS Galilei before its retirement. She was in mothballs in the Sol System when the Dominion War broke out and was one of the ships tapped for refurbishment when the high attrition rate meant more ships were needed to fill the fleets. Tet Yards, a subcontractor to Utopia Planitia, scoured the mothballed ships for hulls and parts, and started to piece her together as a test-bed ship.
Galilei's standard warp engines were removed in favor of a set taken from a refit Constitution, giving the ship a more robust and higher warp capable system. The impulse deck was also expanded across near the entire width of the stern. Test-cruises a showed a vast improvement between thrust and weight, making her one of the fastest ships for her size in normal space. She was more than able to hold her own against the speed records of the Klingon BoP, though she was not as maneuverable. But, at high warp, there was found to be a tendency for flutter through the ship's space-frame that required continual adjustments to the integrity fields.
The torpedo bay was also removed and grafted onto the bottom of the upper hull. Scientific/survey equipment had long since been removed from the lower hull, and into the open spaces were added racks for photon torpedo storage.
For weapons, she has minimal phasers, instead relying on her vast photon torpedo magazines. She is not meant to tangle with any ship on her own, instead operating in concert with larger ships such as Excelsior-, Ambassador- and Galaxy- class ships as a 'torpedo boat.' Using her high thrust-to-weight impulse engines, she would dash out on a torpedo run and unleash a stream of photon torpedoes from her rapid-fire launchers. She would then retreat while the launchers were reloaded. Transporters would quickly move new torpedoes from the secondary hull to the torp bay, making her ready for another run in minutes.
Unfortunately, she would be the only one of her type. Under command of Commander Theodore Raimi, she reached the front lines late in the Dominion War, though her brief history could be celebrated. Operating with the USS Exeter NCC-26531, she helped in destroying seven Jem'hadar raiders and one battleship, though that last would lead to her own loss as well. With Exeter heavily damaged, Joxer's warp engines off-line and shields failing, Commander Raimi had his crew beamed off and launched his fast little ship straight at the enemy. With half a load of torpedoes still in her magazines and Exeter covering her advance, the Joxer rammed the far larger Dominion ship, saving the Exeter and Joxer's surviving crew. Commander Raimi was also saved, having been beamed out at the last moment.
