Scale: 1/12
I had an R5-D4 kit to spare after building my Artoo kit, and I decided to have fun with it, imagining what R5's future would look like on Tatooine, left behind by that Skywalker jerk and his better-maintained servomotored sidekicks. I envisioned a hard life for poor R5: rough work, lots of wear-and-tear, and not much in the way of cosmetic care. Like anyone with a good work ethic and a stubborn streak, R5 has endured.
So after basic painting with Tamiya spray paints, I weathered R5 heavily, using physical scratches and gouges, chipping effects, sponged-on oil paint, freehand-painted damage, and...uh...carbon-scoring. I used artists oils, weathering powders, gundam markers, and sandpaper to create his worn appearance.
The base is built around a wooden cube. I made the terrain with sculpey, added small scale model train ballast for sand, and painted and weathered using artist oils and weathering powders.
For the rest of the base, I used pictures of Artoo-Detoo, BB-8, and Chopper to create custom Wanted Posters advertising rewards for capture. I transliterated all the wording into Aurebesh. I printed them out, ironed them to seal the ink, and attached them using ModgePodge and white glue. But you'll notice there are no posters advertising a reward for R5, which gives us the title of the piece, also in Aurebesh: "Not The Droid You're Looking For".
Not my most canon or screen-accurate build, but definitely one of the most fun.
