190 ton Hammer's Slammer's Hovertank (1/48th Scale)

By Paul Roberts

Hovertank

This is a purely for fun project. Having recently read David Drake's books "Hammers Slammers" about a future mercenary heavy mechanized brigade, I thought I'd have a go at the parts box and see what turned up. I used two M60A2 upper hulls face to face to make the basic hull and used the turret ring, mantlet and parts of the upper turret of the M60A2 to make the turret. The shape of the turret is from epoxy putty over a mandrel and the main gun (the 20 cm Powergun) is made from an old Apollo escape tower coupled to a gun from a Star Wars X-wing. Automatic defence systems targeting radars, night fighting equipment and a cool camouflage rounded out the monster.

While the base kits were 1/35, the vehicles in the books are supposed to be 190 tons, so I used a 1/48 aircrewman to give the monster the right sense of scale. These are really fun to build. Who's gonna tell you the detail is wrong??
