The figure on the left is of the Martian from the book"War of the Worlds" by H.G. Wells. It was made from sculpy and has glass taxidermy alligator eyes (turned sideways). It's about 8 inches wide and 8 inches tall. I got the eyes from WASCO, a taxidermy supply house - you can call them at 1-800 -334- 8012. They have loads of stuff that is very usable in figure modeling - catalog pages full of different size and type animal eyes, devices to imprint scales of different sizes, claws, teeth, fins, you name it! Want rattlesnake eyes? Four sizes available. Or check out one of the twentytwo different styles of fully detailed wild turkey heads. Their's is one of the strangest, spookiest, catalogs in existence. In his book "FIRST MEN IN THE MOON" H.G.Wells invented a race of insect creatures, the Selinites (right picture). I thought it be fun to model them, so I made one out of two AMT giant mantis kits and some epoxy putty. The creature carries a helmet made out of a fishing bobber with disposable fork tines attached. Its eye pieces are plastic rolly-polly toy animal eyes with the backs cut off and then tinted dark blue. The figure stands about 10 inches tall. |
