Scratchbuilt SA-43 Hammerhead

By Jack Wendt

I know that there is a resin model of the SA-43 Hammerhead fighter from Space; Above and Beyond, but it cost a wee bit too much for me. I used the plans in an issue of the Sci-fi and Fantasy model magazine, screen captures from the television, and CGI renders found on the web to construct this model. There are essential 4 versions of this "plane." The original blueprints, the original static display, the CGI used in the episodes after the 2 part pilot, and the CGI rendered by fans of the show. All have little bits of differences here and there.

I used pine and balsa to make forms for vacuforming the parts, and a heck of a lot of Squadron putty. The only parts from another model are the wheels, which I got off of a B-52 built a long time ago. I used some caps off of bottles and tubes for the turbines and the 4 rear engines. I say 4 rear engines. The outer engines are seen lit on the TV screens, but there are 2 tear duct shaped black areas inside these 2 engines, which I assume are for atmospheric flight versus space flight. I scratchbuilt a cockpit of sorts, and I used a bunch of decals from an after market decal sheet for modern jets.
