Before the attack Raptors are used to attack the Cylon fleet there was a quickly-assembled and camouflaged prototype model. From this prototype's extensive testing it was determined the attack version of the Raptor was viable.
Camouflage was used on this variant to help hide its capabilities and testing from possible Cylon spies in the fleet.(plus it looks really cool like this) With the new ability to make the fleet Raptors attack craft it more then doubled the fire power of the fleet. Many Raptor pilots wanted to change all Raptors to the new cammo but where overridden by the CAG.
There are a number of differences between the fleet attack role Raptor and the prototype Raptor AO.
Prototype Raptor AO differences:
- Single use multiple missile launchers (fleet version is reusable via built in hinges)
- Prototype carried a short range low yield nuke.(fleet version carries to miniguns)
- Prototype mini guns are not as refined as the fleet version
- Attachment points on fleet version are far stronger and made to be more streamlined.
The kit used is the Black Suns 1/72 Raptor (great kit by the way!) built mostly out of the box with added scratch built features. These include the two multiple missile launchers, the mini gun and ammo drum. The smaller missiles come from a 1/72 apache kit and the larger missile is from the 1/72 weapons set. There are no pilots right now as I have seemed to have lost them somewhere. The interior was painted and weather even though it is barely visible through the cockpit. Colors used for the camo are flat black as a primer, light coat of helo drab and then a motlling of marine green. It really gives the Raptor that menacing look.
