During the battle of Yavin, many pilots, including the Red Leader, were killed by shooting the engines. In the years following Yavin it became evident that the rebels needed to beef up the X-wing, or look for a new fighter all together. The A-wing and the B-wing were still unavailable due to many short comings that are a result of a rebellion, and the Rebels were stuck with their X-wings and the few spare parts they had.
One of the designs that was cobbled together was the X-Wing DUO. Its design allowed for longer distance missions, lower chance of being shut down as a result of engine failure, plus when required, much faster bursts to escape enemy fire.
Unfortunately, the plans and the only prototype under development was in Hoth when the Imperial attack came. The DUO was lost and soon the rebellion acquired the A- and B- wings, thus making DUO obsolete before it ever had any chance to take off.
For this build I used the Revell kit. The model comes pre painted. For my kit bash I used 2 models.
The wings were cut off on the first model, while the pivoting mechanism was cut off on the second unit. Carefully gluing the parts together resulted in the double engine on each wing. The original paint job was toned down using alcohol, then alcohol-acrylic paint solution was used to weather the model. Cotton swab dipped in alcohol was used to remove extra weathering paint.
