Anakin’s Padme Racer

Sponsorship opportunities available ------ Ask us about them!

by Gordon Cloudman

Scale: 1/24

Anakin often went on and on recounting stories of pod racing on Tatooine. Padme could remember the thrill it had given him. She knew how much he missed it. She decided to surprise him with a wedding present: A gift which she hoped might rekindle that childish delight in him. She arranged for a ship to be built in secret by Theed Palace Space Vessel Engineering Corps, the builders of the N-1 starfighter. They started with two prototype engines; a little large in size, but far more powerful than should ever have been put on a ship this size. These made it amazingly fast, though a bit unruly to fly.

Fully armed, shielded, and space capable, it was truly a ship to behold. It even came with its own dedicated R2 unit: R2-M5. Recently damaged during the attack on the droid fighters command ship, the R2 unit was fully reconditioned to ride in the rumble seat.

Anakin loved the ship as much as she had hoped he would. He immediately took her for a celebratory ride. After a long two minutes of flying at top speed only a few feet about the ground through mountain passes, she insisted he let her out. It took her several hours to walk back to the city and she never rode in it again.

The fuselage is the “Aluma Coupe”, by Boyd Coddington. I filled in the rear wheel indents with Aves, built hinging for the hood and roof, and added the ribs for chrome around the window and down the side of the body.

The wings are from a WWII Black Widow with a couple of false fingernails for the laser cannon welts. The engines are modified model rocket nose cones with a few more false fingernails and a couple of classic car spare tires (and plenty of putty) finishing off the front of the engines.

I scratch built R2-M5, as well as the miscellaneous stuff under the hood and the overhead cockpit controls and yoke.

The finish is plain ol' Black Rust-oleum (via airbrush), a little wet sanding, some Bare Metal Foil and a couple coats of Future.
